The Milton Heritage Greenway & Trail

The Milton Heritage Greenway and Trail officially opened in May 2023, offering visitors and residents a scenic and tranquil pathway through the historic town of Milton. This thoughtfully designed trail not only provides a peaceful outdoor experience but also serves as a window into Milton’s rich past. Along the route, ten historical markers highlight the businesses that once thrived during the town’s bustling tobacco production years, offering insights into the industry that played a pivotal role in shaping the local economy and community.

Visitors to the trail can enjoy a relaxing stroll while learning about Milton’s vibrant history, making it a perfect stop for history buffs, nature lovers, and those simply seeking a quiet retreat. The lush greenery and well-maintained pathway create an inviting atmosphere, making it a favored destination for locals and travelers alike.

In addition to its historical significance, the Milton Heritage Greenway and Trail has become a cherished space for seasonal events. In 2024, the Milton Merchants Association helped sponsor two festive experiences, bringing new life and excitement to the trail. The Spooky Trail Walk offered visitors a thrilling, family-friendly Halloween adventure, complete with themed decorations and costumed characters enhancing the eerie atmosphere. Later in the year, the Twinkling Lights Trail transformed the greenway into a dazzling holiday spectacle, illuminating the path with festive lights and decorations. Throughout the weekends in December, visitors were invited to take in the seasonal charm, making it a beloved holiday tradition for the community.

Whether you’re exploring the trail to immerse yourself in Milton’s storied past or enjoying one of its lively seasonal events, the Milton Heritage Greenway and Trail continues to be a treasured landmark, offering both education and enjoyment in the heart of this historic town. The Milton Heritage Greenway & Walking Trail Project

Currently Milton Renaissance Foundation is the tax-exempt sponsoring organization of The Milton Heritage Greenway & Walking Trail. Milton’s early warehouse district, located in a now wooded-over area between Fairview Street and East Street, the area behind Commercial Row, include streets still owned by the Town of Milton. Town Commissioners voted to reopen the old Crop Street, connecting Liberty Street (named for Liberty Warehouse, which is thought to have been the first warehouse with appointed inspectors) to Bridge Street North, formerly Warehouse Street. This will be Milton’s first community pedestrian recreational space. Groundbreaking is planned for April 4, 2022. Should you desire to donate towards this project, checks may be sent to Milton Renaissance Foundation, Attention Greenway Project, PO Box 86 Milton NC 27305. Check back soon for photos of the progress.
